The Loop, the windy city's downtown commercial centre. The Loop is not only Chicago's business heart but also houses the government for Cook County. Officially the community area of the Loop is flanked on the north and west by the Chicago River and Lake Michigan forms its eastern boundary. Roosevelt Road delineates it to the south. Unofficially, the Loop has grown over the years and covers a lot more. Its more visually accepted boundary is the elevated CTA tracks that circle the area and it is common to refer to the whole downtown area encircled by these tracks as the Loop.
The origin of the name of the Loop is usually attributed to a loop created by a cable car transport system that operated in the area in the 1880's. This today has been replaced by the rapid transit system that serves Chicago popularly known as the ‘L' from which the Loop continues to draw its name.
In the Loop high-rises rule the roost and form the popular skyline of Chicago which is often seen in movies. One of the most famous buildings comprising this contemporary skyline is the Willis Tower, earlier known as the Sears Tower, the tallest building in the United States of America. Other notable landmarks ofthe Loop are the Chicago Board of Trade Building and the Historic Michigan Boulevard District.
Once a visitor's gaze settles a little lower, also on display in the Loop are several extraordinary examples of the sculpting genius of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder and Henry Moore. These outdoor gems coexist alongside many more items ofinterest housed indoors in the Art Institute of Chicago - one of United States' biggest art museums.
Entertainment is a serious business in the Loop, which houses Chicago's Downtown Theatre District and offers a varied fare to choose from between the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Civic opera House, and the Chicago Theatre amongst many more venues. If you aren't keen on the price tags of the tickets to these venues, free concerts can be enjoyed all through the summer at the Grant Park alongside Chicago's lakefront and if you are here during the Chicago food festival thenthere would be plenty to tickle your taste buds along with the music.
Right alongside the entertainment and the recreation is the shopping. The Loop holds many enticements for the avid shopper who can explore the Loop Retail Historic District, of course, to the peril of his or her wallet. If you are into celebrity spotting then look no further than the Macy's on State Street. On second thoughts, do look further down State Street and enjoy the hustle bustle there which epitomizes the buzz that makes the Loop the heart of Chicago.
